PROVIDENCE, RI – Providence College Athletics finished 14th overall in the NCAA Division I Team Works Community Service Competition with seven Friar teams finishing in the top-10.

Since July 1, 2021, 428 Friar student-athletes have logged a combined 3,546 hours volunteering at 70 events serving 34 different organizations. The economic impact of these hours totaled $101,209.

Seven teams have also been recognized in the 2021 NCAA Team Works Helper Helper Community Service competition.

Friar Field Hockey finished in second place in Division I Field Hockey by logging 384 hours teaming up with organizations such as Surfrider RI and Go4TheGoal. During the team’s annual Field Hockey Friendzy, the team raised over $1,500 in benefit of the Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital in honor of Luke.

One hundred percent participation from all student-athletes came through two yearly efforts led by SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Council). Each night, community members gather outside of Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, RI to wave goodnight to children who are battling serious illness. During the spring semester, student-athletes representing all 19 varsity sports, gathered outside of the hospital on two different evenings with flashlights and Friar signs to wish the children good night.

In addition, each team adopts children for Christmas through the DaVinici Center’s Adopt-A-Family project. The Adopt-A-Family Project is a program set in place to improve the quality of life for the residents in the North End of Providence. The families work with the center throughout the year in a variety of ways. This specific program matches donors with children in need to provide gifts of clothing and toys during the Christmas season. All 19 varsity athletic sports teams at Providence College were assigned a group of children to help provide for. This year, over 350 gifts were delivered to the center for 130 children from 44 local families.
